American Museum Of Natural History

Physical Science Educator

The American Museum of Natural History is one of the world's preeminent scientific and cultural institutions, and has as its mission to discover, interpret and disseminate information about human cultures, the natural world and the universe through a wide-ranging program of scientific research, education and exhibition.

The Education department's Youth Initiatives (YI) group is seeking a full-time Physical Science Educator to teach out-of-school programs for 6th-12th grade students in the form of camps, institutes and after-school courses. Additionally, the Educator will revise and develop curricula for those programs as needed.

The YI group, a division of the Museum's Education department, is dedicated to STEM workforce development and science enrichment for youth ages 10 to 24. In YI, we aspire to be a hub and model for youth science learning and engagement that responds to institutional and societal discrimination that prevents full participation in science by all young people. We are looking for candidates committed to this vision in working with the YI team to build a more just and equitable community of STEM learners and leaders.

Candidates must be committed to working towards this mission and open to learning and implementing equitable and inclusive pedagogical practices that elevate all learners.

Job duties include:
  • Teach YI programs, including SRMP, Lang Science Scholars, Science Alliance, high school workshops and Children and Family Learning.
  • Revise or design life science curricula as needed throughout the year for various program departments.
  • Participate in professional learning, including class observation, educational professional development (including special exhibits), DEI sessions and co-teaching with more senior educators.
  • Manage an academic-year work schedule of Tuesday-Saturday. Depending on the class, scheduling may also include after-school (until 7pm), school holidays and peak programming during the summer (5-6 weeks).

The expected salary for the Physical Science Educator is $56,036.53/annual. The AMNH offers an extensive benefits package designed to meet the needs of our dedicated and diverse community.

Pay will be determined based on several factors. The hiring range for the position at commencement is based on the type of work and the scope of responsibilities. The salary and placement offered is based on a number of individualized factors, including, but not limited to, skills, knowledge, training, education, credentials, areas of specialization and depth and scope of experience.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in a physical science field, education or another related field.
  • Proven knowledge and mastery of physical science content and material.
  • Proven passion for youth education.
  • Prior experience working with youth ages 11 to 18.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in education or science.
  • Experience co-teaching.
  • Experience with coding, computational thinking or data science.
  • Experience with culturally-responsive and/or justice-oriented pedagogy.
